Meteora is a UNESEC world Heritage site. The unique rock formations are stunning. There are 6 monasteries that are open to the public.
Important information
Dress Code
There is a dress code for the Monasteries, Women must wear skirts that is longer than knee and shoulder must be covered. Men must wear long pants. Some monasteries provide a wrap in case you don’t meet the dress code. But it is always better to dress accordingly. They are very strict about the dress code, Jayden was mistaken as a girl at two of the tree monasteries and was asked to take a wrap before we explained that he’s a boy.
Opening times
Not all the monasteries are open every day and the opening times varies, check the most up to date schedule to see which ones are open. We visited 3 of the monasteries.
Entrance Fee
Entrance fee is paid at each Monasteries. When we visited in 2023, entrance fee was 3 Euro per person per Monasteries.
Tour/Taxi Service
From our cruise port in Volos, Meteora is about a 2 hour drive. We booked a day tour with Volos Taxis service. The whole booking process is easy, they are very responsive with email. The driver was friendly and even though the driver is not a tour guide, he provided information about the area. Driver picked us up on time from the cruise port, drove us to Meteora and dropped us back to Cruise port after the tour.
Viewpoint
This viewpoint is close to Holy Monastery of Rousanou
Holy Monastery of St. Stephen
This is the monastery that is the easiest to get to, no steps required.
Monastery of the Holy Trinity at Meteora
This is where the James Bond movie ‘For your eyes only’ was filmed. We did not visit the inside.
Holy Monastery of Rousanou
This is one of the smaller monastery but my favorite. Our driver let us walk down from the viewpoint to the Monastery, he then drove the car to the car park downhill from the monastery. After our visit we walked down to meet him at the lower car park.
Holy Monastery of Great Meteoron
This is the biggest Monastery
Monastery of Varlaam
This Monastery was not open on the day we visited
Holy Monastery of St. Nicholas Anapafsas
We did not visit this Monastery
