Bavaria 14-day Palaces/Castles tickets
We were in Bavaira for about a week and planned to visit many of the Bavaria palaces/castles. This 14-day tickets for Family covers 2 adults and kids. The price was 66 Euro (in 2022) for family tickets. Check website for more information and list of covered places.
Neuschwanstein Castle is included in the Bavaria palaces/castles tickets. The Hohenschwangau Castle and Museum of the Bavarian Kings are not included. Tickets for all Three can be booked online at the official website.
It is strongly recommended to book the tour online in advance, if you have the 14-day tickets just select “Free Adult Holder Multi-Day Ticket” as ticket type and only need to pay the Eur2.5 online booking fee.
Book early! When we planned our Germany trip we had to switch our itinerary around due to pre book online tickets not available for Neuschwanstein castle. They have tickets for sale at the ticket center daily but the Neuschwanstein tour do sell out.
We have found the Audio guide to be better than regular tour (especially when masks were still required, sometimes it was difficult to hear/understand the tour guide. With Audio guide there is still a tour guide with the group, the tour guide activates the audio guide from room to room and we have found we prefer this option)
Our ticket booking story (it’s a happy ending)
When we tried to book the tickets online, the ideal date would have been to visit on our second or third day (April 10 or April 11 2022), however no tickets for Neuschwanstein Castle was available on either days. We could only get ticket for April 12. So we had to change the itinerary and drive to Garmisch-Partenkirchen first then backtrack to Hohenschwangau.
We did not know about the 14-day pass when we booked the tickets for Neuschwanstein Castle so we had already paid for the combo Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles online. Online sales are final, no refund/exchange available. Also, the combo tickets can only to be for tours on the same day.
We had booked the online tickets for Hohenschwangau castle April 12 9:50am and Neuschwanstein castle 1:40pm. We wanted to see if there were earlier tours available so when we arrived to Hohenschwangau town the afternoon around 3:30 on April 11(we were staying the night in Füssen) we stopped by the ticket office to check about exchanging our tickets. Ideally if we could do 1 castle right then and the other castle early next morning that means we can leave the area before noon and have more time in Dachau/Munich.
Initially they were very strict about the no exchange policy and that the combo ticket can’t be used on different days. After explaining we also have the 14-day pass and would it be possible to get new ticket for Neuschwanstein castle using the pass and just change our combo ticket for Hohenschwangau and we’re not asking for refund from the already paid combo ticket. They finally agreed. The only tour available for later that day was Hohenschwangau, so we were able to get the 4pm Hohenschwangau tour and get early morning tour for Neuschwanstein at 9:50am. It worked out perfectly for us.
Parking
There are 4 parking lots, info and map available here.
Parking fee in 2022 was 10 Euro for the day. we parked at P4 both days and it was convenient.
Photography
No photography allowed inside the castles
Hohenschwangau Castle
The Hohenschwangau tour takes about 45 minutes. The walk to the castle takes about 20-30 minutes from P4 parking lot.
Neuschwanstein Castle
Neuschwanstein Castle tour takes about 35 minutes. The hike up the hill to castle entrance takes about 30-40 minutes, you need to be at the entrance before tour time, the turnstile will display tour times that are allowed to enter.
There are horse carriages that take people up to the entrance. We did not take the horse carriage and enjoyed the hike up.
See the picture above, there’s a display screen above the turnstile. Only when your tour group time is displayed are you allowed to enter. The stairs on the left side leads to a courtyard, check it out before the tour, the tour exit from the castle is on the other end of the castle.
Marienbrücke (Mary’s bridge) viewpoint
The bridge is reachable by an easy uphill path which takes about 15 minutes from Neuschwanstein castle and provide a very good viewpoint of the castle. Unfortunately, the bridge was closed for maintenance during our visit.
Alpsee – Hohenschwangau
After the Neuschwanstein castle tour we enjoyed a picnic at the lake and we saw a swan, and kids were happy to have free wifi at the lake (wifi from Museum of the Bavarian kings right by the lake, which we did not visit).
