Kailua-Kona harbor isn’t deep enough and cruises are tender. From Kailua-Kona, you could drive north to Waipio Valley Lookout and Pololu Valley Lookout; drive east to MaunaKea; enjoy MaunaKea Beach or Kapuna Beach; or find Kona coffee at coffee farms.
We drove north to Waipio Valley Lookout. Although a small place and not much things around, the view is breathtaking. On the way back, we went to Hula Daddy Kona coffee farm and do a coffee farm tour. Tour is about Kona coffee 101 but free.
Back to Kailua-Kona just past noon, we originally would like to take Kona Brewery tour. However, bookings were all full. If you plan to go, better book ahead first to know your tour time and then go somewhere else while waiting. Kona Brewery also has a nice bar and restaurant onsite to taste their fresh beer if you just want beers.
Since time to leave is still early. seniors was having fun in street shopping while kids played water at an inner harbor. The harbor is tiny but good in marine life. I taught kids how to snorkel again and they did better than last time in Hanauma Bay. All got what they wanted to end a day in Kona.
