Disney Aulani locates on Ko Olina Resort area of Ewa Plain in the very west end Oahu. Although a secluded retreat heaven, west Oahu used to be a barren place without much business activities. In the last decade, a lot of new developments pop up around Kapolei not far from Ewa Plain, both residential and commercial. State agencies gradually move to Kapolei. Big name shopping centers and super stores flock one after the other. New mono rail is on the way to connect Kapolei to downtown Honolulu. All changes well place Kapolei into the next big commercial center and, hence, attract more visitors to the west side.
Ko Olina Resort area is just minutes away from Kapolei. The area has several nice lagoons. Big name resort chains are moving in fast after reviving efforts. Disney Aulani is one of early arrivals and get the best spot on Kohola Lagoon. The resort is a very relaxing place to spend a day if you book a room there. Little water park on the central court fit young-age kids well although small. Lagoon is big, deep on outskirt, but safe. I swim out but could not see much living things because water isn’t very clear though.
If you don’t have budget for a room there, don’t worry, you still can enjoy lagoon and tour Aulani. Because beach is state property, you can park your car in nearby public parking lot and walk over. We spend hours in lagoon on our first day (pool is Aulani guest only). Don’t leave before sunset which rewards a fantastic view. Before leaving Ko Olina, you can enjoy good Hawaiian fusion food at Roy’s, or grab some local foods in Kapolei supermarkets. My favorite is tuna poke of any kind.
