Havana, Cuba

Havana is very safe even at night. The heavy penalty of violating law might play a big role in maintaining safe tourism environment. If taking a cruise to Cuba, add about 2 hours buffer to get through the custom in your first port of call at Cuba. The process is easy but slow due to limited assigned officers. Our cruise arrived at 03:00 PM and the time we got through the custom was already 05:20 PM. In November, Daylight gets dark quickly after 6:00 PM. So Plan your time well.

Travel Tips

  • It may take more than 2 hours to get through the custom like our case.
  • the credit card is largely unavailable except China UnionPay
  • Hire a tour package out of old Havana with classic American cars will give you best experience.

Stores often close before 6:00 PM. Do your shopping early. Although CBC currency is officially what tourist should use, most private business does accept other currencies such as Euro and US dollar. Credit car is largely unavailable but some shops does accept China UnionPay. Exchange CBC purportedly since CBC is one way exchange that you can not change back to other currencies.

Old Havana

Convento de San Francisco de Asis, Basilica Menor

The capital city’s historic heart, Old Havana, or La Habana Vieja, has been named a UNESCO World Heritage site, dating back to 1519. There are more than 900 landmarks dotting the district.

El Floridita

Home to Hemingway’s favorite daiquiri, the cocktail bar from 1817 became legendary. At night the bar is full of people. We are not able to find seats at all. If you like, sit down near Hemingway statue and have a daiquiri with him.

El Floridita

Castillo De Los Tres Reyes Del

If taking a cruise, don’t miss the awesome view of Castillo De Los Tres Reyes Del at the mouth of the harbor. It fires canon at 09:00 PM every night, but only one shot in a flash.

Revolution Square

After a drive along El Malecon, Havana’s 5-mile long seaside esplanade, we were at revolution square. It was dark that we barely can see Jose Marti Memorial. Two lighting portraits on two government building tells a history instead.
