Garmisch-Partenkirchen

Info

Check Partnach Gorge webiste for opening information. It may be closed for safety reasons. During spring time when we visited it was closed the week before our visit and reopened during our visit.

Parking

Parking lots are available at the Olympic Ski Jump, Partnach Gorge is walkable from there, we drove past Olympic Ski Jump and found street parking closer to Partnach Gorge and saved about 20 mins walk.

Town center

A lot of Hotels/Restaurants are in the town center area. We visited on a Sunday and street parking was easy to find, but a lot of stores were closed on Sundays. There is a pedestrian only area with shops and restaurants.

Partnach Gorge

Partnach Gorge is an out and back trail, the round trip is about 1 miles. We spent about 1.5 hours in the area. The path is narrow at places. The Iron bridge was closed when we visited.

Lake Riessersee

I saw pictures of Lake Riessersee when searching for hotels, there is a hotel right by the lake (but it was out of our budget range). The lake looked beautiful and we decided to drive there for a visit and it did not disappoint.

Zugspitze

Zugspitze is Germany’s highest peak.

Eibsee Take cable car up to zugspitze Family ticket 140EUR (Includes one mountain ascent and descent, either in the form of a round trip on the cogwheel train, a ride on the Gletscherbahn cable car and the Cable car Zugspitze. You can use the Gletscherbahn cable car as often you like on the day of your visit.)

There is also a two peak pass option for 181EUR (can be used on two days) and includes Alpspix viewing platform. We had initially planned to get the two peak pass however the week we were there Garmisch-Classic Ticket had closed for the winter season the week before and have not opened for the summer season.

We took the Cable car up, walked around the platform (and also to Austria side) then took the Glestscherbahn cable car to the glacier after walking around the glacier area we took the cogwheel train back to Lake Eibsee. We spent around 5 hours in Zugspitze.

Glacier area

Skiing, sledding and hiking area, there are rentals for sledding, and we’ve asked kids if they wanted to rent sleds, the answer was no. However, when we hiked up the hill to the sledding area they couldn’t resist trying to slide down, I had rain pants and jacket in my backpack, so Jayden put on the rain pants and Abbie tied the rain jacket around her waist and both were able to slide a bit. After we walked back to the rental place, we asked the kids again if they wanted to rent sled and go back out for some real sledding and they still said no, instead they opted to get some currywurst at the restaurant.
