Delphi, Greece

Delphi, where the oracle of Apollo spoke, was the site of the omphalos, the ‘navel of the world’. Blending harmoniously with the superb landscape and charged with sacred meaning, Delphi in the 6th century B.C. was indeed the religious centre and symbol of unity of the ancient Greek world.

The Navel

Delphi is said to have been founded by Zeus, who determined it to be the centre of the world. Mythology holds that Zeus released two eagles at opposite ends of the world and they flew to meet here, in Ancient Delphi. A stone, the Omphalos, marks the spot that the ancients considered to be the navel of the world.

The town of Delphi

Our driver took us to the town of delphi for a stroll around town (there are a few shops/restaurants). But he wanted to show us the water. In the ancient times people come to Delphi via the water way instead of driving through the mountains like we do nowadays.
