Copenhagen, Denmark

Major Copenhagen attractions locates around Strøget Shopping Mile. Only Little Mermaid is a bit far. Walking or biking is the best way to tour the city. Finding a public parking space maybe challenging and street signs are only in Danish. Not only attractions in the little city, out-of-town day trips  (see below) also worth to explore.

Travel Tips

  • be aware of rental car size definition. In our case with Avis, our 7-seats full-size van reservation only come with third-row convertible with no luggage space.
  •  Ocean Quay Terminal, farthest one of Copenhagen cruise ports, is not walking friendly from østerport station, the closest train station. Taxi is limited at the terminal and may take your one hour waiting during disembarkation. Bus stop is right out of terminal with frequent bus services. Bus #25  and bus#27 server Ocean Quay Terminal to train station. More detail here
  • sightseeing boat or hop-on-hop-off boat is a great way for city tour if long walking isn’t your thing
  • office at Christiansborg Palace for free parliament tour ticket opens on 10:00 AM. Get ticket first thing to start your day in the area.

Places We Go

In the town

Changing of the Guard at Amalienborg Palace 12:00PM is comparably a smaller scale then Buckingham Palace in London. Nearby Nyhavan Harbor is a popular place of eating and boat touring. Two boat companies operates there and family-run one is much cheaper. Rosenborg Castle is a small castle and a playground in the garden is a good break for kids. Geological Museum and botanical garden across Oster Voldgade from Rosenborg are good add-ons. Geological Museum exhibits the fifth largest meteor in the world free at gate. Botanical garden is also free of charge. Parliament tour run free in Danish/English. Get limited tickets at Chirstiansborg Palace as early as possible. The Christiansborg Palace tower, the highest tower in Copenhagen opened to public from 2014, starts service from 11:00AM. Also don’t miss royal church from outside corner of Christiansborg.

Out of the town

Roskilde Cathedral and Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde are interesting. Viking Ship Museum offers program through day. Viking culture and history tour is funny and really good for all ages especially kids. Scavenger hunt at Roskilde Cathedral is a fun way to understand cathedral history.  Frederiksborg Castle used to be a rundown castle but turns into beautiful the Museum Of National History. Don’t miss its garden. Kronborg Castle and Helsingor shopping area is a good combination for train rider. Kronborg Castle runs Hamlet play at different locations in the castle. Check the schedule first once at castle courtyard. The Casemates is dark, cold, but very fun underground passages. Don’t skip. When we arrive Helsingor around 6:00PM, whole shopping area is like a dead town. All stores close except restaurants and shopping mall.

Hamlet Play are performed scene by scene at varies locations at Kronborg Castle. Visit needs to climb up and down from one building to another. You can ask staffs for building but didn’t help you much to chase each scene. Better stick with scenes on center court only for people who can’t climb.

On Sweden side from Copenhagen, Malmo is a popular destination. Direct trains over Øresund Bridge run frequently between CPH airport to Malmo Station. However, attractions like  Turning Torso and Malmo Castle aren’t that attractive to me though.
