Bontebok National Park

Information

Nestled at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains in the Western Cape of South Africa, Bontebok National Park offers a tranquil escape and a chance to witness a remarkable conservation success story. Originally established to protect the endangered bontebok antelope, this park is a haven of peace and natural beauty. While smaller than some of South Africa’s more famous parks, Bontebok offers a unique and intimate wildlife experience.

Bontebok National Park is about 2.5 hour drive from Cape Town, it was a perfect 1 night stay for us to break up the itinerary. To be honest, if not staying overnight at the park, as a day visit it’s not as exciting as the other national parks. But if you like camping, fishing and just to relax and enjoy the peacefulness, this is worth a visit.

Less than 5 minutes in the park we were greeted with our first bontebok sighting

Accommodation

Bontebok national park offers Self-Catering Chalets as well as campsites inside the park. We booked the Family Cottage. It had 2 bedrooms with living room and kitchen and an outdoor deck and picnic table to enjoy the surrounding sceneries.

Cottages along the river

Sunset, starry night, sunrise

We enjoyed the sunset, star gazing, and sunrise in the park.

Hikes/Self Drive

There are a few hikes in the park, we did the Acadia Trail (1.6km) early morning while the kids were still sleeping and part of the Aloe Hill Trail. It’s a nice stroll but nothing to write home about.

We did the self driving loop, the roads are ok. If it had rained some part could be challenging.

Animals

In addition to Bonteboks we saw Red hartebeest, Angulate tortoise, four-striped
field mouse, Toktokkie and lots of birds
